Introduction

When I began to get interested in my family history, I did not have living parents or grandparents, and no other living relatives except  an aging aunt living in another state and whose address I did not know. I had a sketch of a family tree with a few names and dates on it. Later I learned that some of the names and most of the dates on the sketch were wrong. I knew the family originally came from England, and that piece of information was  from an old letter written in the 1892  to my grandfather after his visit to England to see some family members.  I started my quest  to find  my roots in 1985..

I started by looking at the records of the Mormon Church in the IGI or International Genealogical Index.  The IGI shows the records of the parish church  in England from about 1538 to the late 1800's. In 1538 the King of England proclaimed that from that time forward, all marriages, births and deaths were to be recorded in each parish. In those days the parish church was the focal point of the community.

A study of the  IGI records indicated that the Makinson  family seems to have originated in the county of Lancashire. In this Shire the records of the Makinson's appear to be go back farther than in the surrounding counties and because of this, it was to be the starting point of my search. After entering about 1100 names and associated data from the Mormon records into the computer and sorting this data,, it was found that the family name during the 1500's could be found only in an area around Croston, Chorley, and Brindle. This is about a five-mile circle.

At the Virginia State Library in Richmond, I found references to Rychard Makynson and his son Matthew;  as members of the guild in Preston in the year 1415.The father and son were listed as corvisers (shoemakers). The "y" in the names, later became i's as the language changed. This is the earliest reference to the family name that I have found

Generation 1-3

THOMAS MAKINSON 5th GREAT GRANDFATHER

The most likely candidate for earliest known Makinson ancestor in my line is Thomas Makinson married on October 19, 1703 in the Blackburn Lancashire area to Margaret Tomlinson. They had five children.

Probable Parents Of Thomas Makinson Of Blackburn and their children.

Generation 2

THOMAS MAKINSON 4th GREAT GRANDFATHER

John Makinson, our 3rd great grandfather was born in 1758. The record of his birth is that on the 20th August 1758 a John Makinson was baptized in Blackburn Parish Church, son of Thomas and Mary Makinson of Blackburn. Mary was a widow by the name of Mary Thornton and they married on 27th May 1758 several months before the child's birth. Thomas  Makinson was a Weaver by trade. A Thomas Thornton, also a weaver, died in Blackburn and was buried at St. Mary's cemetery on Sept 23,1757. I assume this man , Thomas Thornton is Mary's former husband. Thomas Makinson may have been a friend of his, and "took up" with the widow after Mr. Thornton's death. The marriage banns were published at the church and the ceremony took place. Note that he could write, while she could only make her mark.

I  have found no other children of the marriage of Thomas Makinson and Mary Thornton
