D. H. (Bud) Shunick Is Laid To Rest -- Fifty-Nine Years Old

The community was saddened by the death of D. H. Shunick, prominent farmer and stock raiser of Warren County, which occurred at 7:45 Friday evening, Jan. 18, at his home, southwest of Alexis. He had been ill for about three months. The son of John and Kathryn Lee Shunick, he was born in Alexis on November 2, 1875. He spent his entire life on the old homestead. On September 22, 1903 he was married to Kathryn Flanagan, of Monmouth, and eleven children were born to this union, all of whom survive with the wife. They are Mrs. T. P. Morris of Monmouth, Kathreine of Chicago, Frances of Peoria, Mrs. Robert Vaughn of Raritan and Edna, Helen, John L., James, Leone, Bernard and Genevieve, at home. Mr. Shunick was one of fourteen children, four of whom preceded him in death. The following sisters survive: Mrs. Mollie McNamara of Kansas City, Mrs. John Berigan of Omaha, Mrs. Harriet Crilley of Shenandoah, Ia., Mrs. Julia Archer of Imogene, Ia., Mrs. Fannie Hayes of Galesburg, Mrs. James O'Donnell of Chicago, Mrs. Kathryn Sloan of New Boston, Mrs. Dick Lafferty of Little York and one brother, Maurice of Galesburg. Always an active man, Mr. Shunick found it difficult to be restrained in recent months by illness. He belonged to no organizations, confining his chief interests to his home. Funeral services were held in St. Theresa's church in Alexis at 9:30 Monday morning. Music was furnished by Mr. & Mrs. J. L. Theilen and Mrs. Helen Bride. Interment was made in St. Mary's cemetery at Monmouth. Pall bearers were Wm. and Andrew Farrell, George Palmer, Harry Winters, Gene Britton and Ed Shay.

SHUNICK, DAVID HENRY, one of the prosperous general farmers and stock raisers of Spring Grove Township, owns one of the most finely improved farms in this region. He was born in Spring Grove Township, November 2, 1875, a son of John and Catherine (Lee) Shunick, natives of County Cork, Ireland, who came to the United States when young. They first lived in Vermont, but later went to New York, where they met and were married. Soon after their marriage they came to Warren County, and for a time he was engaged in working by the month, but later began buying land, and at the time of his death owned 520 acres, all in Spring Grove Township. He always fed stock, believing and proving there was profit in doing so. His death occurred in 1896, and his widow survived himn for only two years. Their children were as follows: John, who lives in Shenandoah, Iowa; Mollie, who is the widow of James McNamire, lives at Kansas City, Missouri; Anistaha, who married John Berrigan of Omaha, Nebraska, Julia, who is the widow of Fred Archer of Shenandoah, Iowa; Morris, who lives in Knox County, Illinois; Harriet, who is Mrs. Mathew Crilley of Shenandoah, Iowa; Anna, who is Mrs. Roy Mackison of Shenandoah, Iowa; Norah, who is Mrs. Michael Mason of Monmouth, Illinois; Catherine, who is Mrs. Lee Sloan of New Boston, Illinois; Frances, who is deceased, married Harry Gardner; David Henry, whose name heads this review; Blanche, who is Mrs. James O'Donnald of Chicago; and Theresa, who is Mrs. Richard Lafferty of Mercer County, Illinois.

David Henry Shunick resided with his parents as long as they lived, and after their demise he bought 347 acres of the home place. His father had erected the handsome large frame residence and brans, but Mr. Shunick has made many other improvements, and takes great pride in keeping his property in the best of condiiton. He does general farming an feeds cattle, horses, and hogs, and raises chickens.

On September 22, 1903, Mr. Shunick was married to Cahterine Flannagan, who was born in Lenox Township, a daughter of James and Josephine (O'Brien) Flannagan, natives of Ireland. Mrs. Flannagan is dead, but her husband survives and lives at Monmouth. Mr. and Mrs. Shunick became the parents of the following children: Ailene, Catherine, Edna, Frances, Helen, John, Teressa, James, Leona, Lawrence, and Genevieve M. Mr. Shunick belongs to the Catholic Church at Alexis. He is a Democrat, and has been a member of the school board for several years. Fraternally he maintains membership with the Knights of Columbus of Monmouth. In his farming Mr. Shunick sets an example many are glad to follow, for he is very progressive in his ideas, and successful in carrying them out.

John Lafferty Died at Hospital - 1/3/74

John S. Lafferty,. aged 65, of Oak Terrace, died this morning at 5:10 o'clock at the Community Memorial Hospital. Born March 2, 1908, at Alexis, he was the son of William E. and Theresa Shunick, and spent his early life at Alexis, where he received his schooling. His marriage to Irene Beccue took place Jan. 24, 1941, at Davenport, Ia. Mr. Lafferty farmed all his life as a livestock and grain farmer. He retired in 1968 from farming, and moved to Lake Warren. For a number of years, he served as Democratic precinct committeeman. Survivors include Mrs. Lafferty, a foster daughter, Mrs. Gene (Judy) Streider of Milan and three granddaughters as well as a number of other relatives. He was preceded in death by his parents. Funeral services will be held Saturday at 10 a.m. at the Immaculate Conception church. Burial will take place in St. Mary's cemetery. The Rosary will be recited at the Turnbull Funeral Home, Friday at 7 p.m. Memorials in memory of Mr. Lafferty may be made to the Alexis Volunteer Ambulance Service, and may be left at the Turnbull Funeral Home.

Services for Miss Jewell Payne were held at 10 a.m. Friday at the Immaculate Conception Church in charge of Msgr. H. F. Prendergast, with the co-celebrants being Father Schmidt, a former pastor, and the Rev. Robert Becker. Burial was in St. Mary's cemetery. Casket bearers were William Gillen, Leroy Gillen, Dick Gillen, George Gillen, Carl Schrieber, and Michael Lee.

SHUNICK, MAURICE T., not only is an excellent farmer, but he has rendered his fellow citizens a service in several public offices, and has always performed his duty as he has seen it. He was born in Spring Grove Township, in January, 1864, a son of Thomas and Ellne (Mahoney) Shunick, natives of County Cork, Ireland, who came to the United States when young, and located in Warren County, Illinois. Here they met and were married, and settled in Spring Grove Township, where, in 1876, they bought land. With the exception of a few years spent in Sumner Township, they spent their married life in Spring Grove Township, where she died about 1894. Following her demise Mr. Shunick moved to Monmouth, and there he died about 1913. Their children were as follows: Maurice T., whose name heads this review; William, who lives at Monmouth; Mary, who is deceased; Margaret, who is Mrs. Maurice Fitzgerald of Chicago; Nellie, who is Mrs. Martin Graham of Denver, Colorado; and Thomas E. and Charles D., both of whom live at Monmouth.

On February 3, 1891, Maurice T. Shunick was married to Kate McCann, born at Monmouth, a daughter of John and Mary (Morris) McCann, natives of County Limerick and County Mayo, Ireland, respectively. After his marriage Mr. Shunick moved to the farm of 104 acres, section 14, Sumner Township, owned by his father, and rented it until his father's death in 1913, when he inherited it. Here he is carrying on general farming. Mr. and Mrs. Shunick became the parents of the following children: Fred, who lives a Monmouth, married Elizabeth Gamble, and they have a daughter, Catherine Elizabeth; Mary, who is Mrs. Otto Wager of Galesburg, Illinois, has three children, John Francis, Margaret and Mary Catherine; Margaret, who lives at Galesburg; Thomas D., Leo, and William, all of whom are at home. Mr. Shunick attended the district schools of Spring Grove and Sumner Townships, and his wife attended the common schools of Adams County, Illinois. They belong to the Catholic Church of Monmouth. He is an independent Democrat, and has served as road commissioner, and for eighteen years has been a school director. Fraternally he maintains membership with the Knights of Columbus and Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks of Monmouth, and the Camp of the Modern Woodmen of America at Little York. Both he and his wife are very popular with their neighbors, and deserve their present prosperity

Charles D. Shunick, Sr., 91, of 310 South A St., died at 8:45 p.m. Friday at the Monmouth Nursing Home. He was born July 2, 1885, at Monmouth, the son of Thomas and Ella Shunick, Sr. He was reared and educated near Monmouth, and attended the McGaw School and Browns Business College at Galesburg. He worked at the Second National Bank, and he and a brother, Thomas were partners in the Shunick Grocery which they operated on the southwest corner of the Public Square. He married Bertha A. Heimin November 1913 at Monmouth. He was a member of the Immaculate Conception Church, and a 70-year and oldest living member of the Monmouth Elks Club 397. Surviving are a son, Charles C. Shunick, Jr., of Monmouth; a daughter, Betty L. Shunick, LaGrange Park; three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. His wife, parents and 11 brothers and sisters died earlier. Funeral will be at 9:30 a.m. Monday at the Immaculate Conception Church. Burial will be at the St. Mary's Cemetery. The rosary will be recited at 7 p.m. Sunday at the Turnbull Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to the Immaculate Conception School building fund. Friends may call until the time of service.

Sister Died - Mrs. Maurice Fitzgerald of Chicago, aged 93, sister of Charles Shunick of Monmouth, died in Chicago. Funeral services and burial will take place Tuesday in Chicago. The former Margaret Shunick was born Feb. 17, 1877, in Monmouth where she spent her early life. For the past 67 years, however, she has been away from Monmouth. Survivors include six children, 11 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren besides her brother.

Death Claims Mrs. Helen Graham

Mrs. Helen F. Graham, a resident of the Colonial Hotel for the past two years, died Tuesday, at 2:35 p.m. at St. Mary's hospital in Galesburg. Born July 21, 1879 in Warren County, the former Helen Shunick was the daughter of Thomas and Ellen (Mahoney) Shunick, and spent her early life in Sumner township. Her marriage to Martin J. Graham took place June 16, 1909, in Monmouth, and his death occurred May 4, 1957. A member of the Immaculate Conception church, Mrs. Graham was also a member of the Altar and Rosary Society of the church. Survivors include a sister, Mrs. Maurice (Margaret) Fitzgerald of Chicago, two brothers, Thomas Shunick and Charles Shunick, both of Monmouth, and a number of nieces and nephews. Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Helen, and a number of brothers and sisters. Funeral services will be conducted Friday, at 9:30 a.m. at the Immaculate Conception church with burial in St. Mary's Cemetery. The rosary will be recited Thursday, at 8 p.m. at the Turnbull Funeral Home. Mrs. Graham had made her home in the Denver, Colo. area for about 46 years, returning to Illinois in 1959.
