Mrs. Sarah F. Shunick, a lifelong resident of Monmouth and community, died Wednesday evening at her home at 510 North 10th St., after an extended illness.

Sarah Cavanaugh Shunick was born Dec., 26, 1889, at Monmouth and was a daughter of the late James H. Cavanaugh and Roseanna Kinney Cavanaugh. She was a teacher in local rural schools prior to her marriage to Richard Louis Shunick on Jan. 28, 1914. Her husband died on Feb. 15, 1932.

She is survived by six children: Miss Rosemary Shunick and Mrs. Eral (Vera) Cofield of Monmouth, Sister Bernadette, OS.B. and Sister Vernonica, O.S.B. both of St. Mary Priory, Nauvoo, Ill., Richard E. Shunick of Paradise Valley, Ariz., and Thomas J. Shunick of Moline; 12 grandchildren; one great granddaughter; five sisters and one brother, Mrs. Kathryn Burns, Miss Rose Cavanaugh, Mrs. Joseph E. Toal and T. James Cavanaugh all of Monmouth, Mrs. Mary McLaughlin of Rockford and Mrs. Ann Shea of Galesburg; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Three sisters, a brother and two infant sisters also died earlier.

Mrs. Shunick was a member of the Immaculate Conception Church and of its Altar and Rosary Society. She was the first president of the Parish Council of the National Council of Catholic Women and the organizer of the first Mothers' Club of the Immaculate Conception School.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at Immaculate Conception Church with burial in St. Mary's Cemetery. Friends may call at the Turnbull Funeral Home until the time of service. The rosary will be recited on Friday evening at 8. Memorials in her memory may be made to the Immaculate Conception Church.

MRS. SARAH SHUNICK

The funeral mass for Mrs. Sarah F. Shunick of 510 North 10th St., who died at her home Wednesday evening, was offered at 10 a.m. Saturday at the Immaculate Conception Church.

Celebrant of the mass and homilist was the Pastor, the Rev. Harold F. Prendergast. Concelebrants with Msgr. Prendergast were the Rev. Robert Becker, co-pastor, the Rev. Ronald Enderlin of Peoria, the Rev. Robert Lee of Moline, the Rev. Edward F. Fitton of Galesburg, the Rev. Walter Buche of Peoria, the Rev. John Wissing and the Rev. Thomas Fahey of Nauvoo.

Lectors for the mass were three grandsons of Mrs. Shunick: Gregory R. Cofield of Decatur, Richard L. Shunick of Moline and Joseph E. Cofield of Boston, Mass. Bearing the gifts in the offertory procession were Miss Sheila Ann Shunick of Moline, all grandchildren of Mrs. Shunick.

The music was furnished by the Benedictine Sisters' Schola of St. Mary Priory, Nauvoo, under the direction of Sister Teresa Ann Harrington, O.S.B.

Paullbearers were Gregory R. Cofield, Joseph E. Cofield, Philip T. Cofield, Richard L. Shunick, Michael T. Shunick and William D. Toel.

The rosary was recited for Mrs. Shunick on Friday evening followed by the reading of Psalm 84 by her grandson.

Mrs. H. Drayson Died in Chicago

Mrs. Harry C. Drayson, aged 73, of Chicago, died this morning in Chicago after a lingering illness. The former Nell Baldwin was born July 8, 1897, the daughter of Tom and Mary (Shunick) Baldwin, and was married to Harry C. Drayson Dec. 6, 1920. The couple resided in Chicago, and Mr. Drayson preceded her in death. Survivors include a son, Harry T. Drayson of Arlington Heights, five granddaughters, a sister, Mrs. Bess McLaughlin of New Boston, and nieces, nephews and other relatives. The Rosary will be recited in Chicago Friday evening, and the body will then be brought to the Holliday and Hoover Memorial Chapel. Saturday morning at 11 o'clock, a funeral mass will be held at the Immaculate Conception church with burial to follow in St. Mary's Cemetery. The family will receive visitors at the Holliday and Hoover Memorla Chapel, Saturday, from 9:30 a.m. until 10:30.

Mrs. McNamara Died at Church (1/6/74)

Mrs. William E. McNamara of 226 Smith Street, died Sunday morning, suffering a sudden attack during the 11 o'clock mass at the Immaculate Conception church. The former Elizabeth Maloney was born April 4, 1886, at Mt. Ayr, Ia., the daughter of William and Katie J. (Lee) Mahoney, and spent her early life in Iowa. Her marriage to William E. McNamara took place in April of 1910 at Monmouth, and he preceded her in death. For a number of years, Mrs. McNamara cooked at the Ford Hopkins Drug Store, and later at the Colonial Hotel. More recently, she had been employed as a companion for elderly residents. A member of the Immaculate Conception chuch, she belonged to the Altar and Rosary Society of the church. She was a member of World War II Mothers Club. Survivors include the following children: Howard McNamara, residing in California, Mrs. Mary Dorothy Hardy of Streator, John Paul McNamara of Abingdon, James Edward McNamara of Orange, Calif., Mrs. Betty Ann Overton of Long Beach, Calif., George McNamara of Rialto, Calif., and David R. McNamara of San Antonio, Tex; 14 grand-children, three great-grandchildren, a brother, James Mahoney of River Grove, Ill, and a sister, Mrs. Calisma (?) Swanson, of Des Moines, Ia. Besides her husband and parents she was preceded in death by a brother, Joseph R. Maloney. Funeral services will be conducted Wednesday, at 10 a.m. at the Immaculate Conception church with burial in St. Mary's Cemetery. The Rosary will be recited Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. at the Turnbull Funeral Home. A memorial fund has been established in memory of Mrs. McNamara for the World War II Mothers Club, and memorials may be left at the Turnbull Funeral Home.

Wedding Secret Fount Out

Bridegroom, Ralph Archer, Taken Ill; Bride, Nurse Goes to Him.

The wedding might have been kept a secret longer but the bridegroom, Ralph Archer was taken sick with a severe cold that bordered pneumonia, so his bride came to assist in his care. Mr. Archer and Miss Marcella O'Dowd of this city were married Saturday night, April 23 by Father Hayes of Imogene.

Mr. and Mrs. Archer are visiting at the home of the bridegroom's parents, Mr. and Mrs. Fred Archer, Imogene, Route 3, while he is recuperating. They will soon go to the James Gilmore farm eight miles northwest of Shenandoah, where Mr. Archer is farming this year.

The bride's parents reside on East Thomas avenue. She has been employed in practical nursing work.

Robert Archer's Brother Dies

Ralph Archer, 69, of Portland, Ore. died suddenly Tuesday night according to word received by his brother, Robert Archer of Imogene, Wednesday.

Mr. and Mrs. Archer left to Portland by plane Wednesday night. Final funeral arrangements were awaiting arrival of the family. The Portland man is survived by nine children, Ralph Jr., of Spokane, Wash., Richard of Wanachee, Wash.; Lt. James B. of Tyndall Air Force Base, Panama City, Fla; John, Philip, David, and Thomas. Mrs. Roger (Helen) Yarbrough, and Mrs. Paul (Annette) Burch, all of Portland; three brothers, Fred Archer, Denver, Colo; Leo Archer, Villisca, and Robert Archer of Imogene; two sisters, Mrs. Kathryne Gilmore of Omaha and Mrs. Frank (Ruth) Saner of Alemeda, Calif., and 17 grandchildren.

Mr. Archer was a World War I veteran and a member of Company M at Red Oak. Burial will be at the National Cemetery in Portland, Ore., Monday morning.

Archer Rites to be Friday

Wife, 36, Died Wednesday of Complications.

Funeral services for Mrs. Marcella Rose Archer, 36, a resident of Red Oak since 1936, will be held Friady at 9 a.m. at St. Mary's Catholic Church with burial in Mount Calvary cemetery at Imogene.

Friends and relatives will meet at the Frank Saner home 103 Hmmond street, this evening at 8 o'clock to recite the rosary for the repose of her soul.

Mrs. Archer died Wednesday morning of complications of ailments at the Saner home after 14 months' illness.

Survivors. -

Survivors are her husband, Ralph A. Archer, nine children, Ralph, jr., in the army, Richard at Imogene, John, James, Phillip, Helen, Annette, David and Thomas, at home; four brothers, Alphonsus O'Dowd of Essex, Eugene O'Dowd of Detroit, Gilbert O'Dowd of Imogene, Philip O'Dowd of Morehead, Ia. two sisters, Mrs. K. D. Miller of Topeka, Kan., and Mrs. Abe Wells of Shenandoah, and her mother, Mrs. Anna O'Dowd of Imogene.

A native of Wakonda, S.D. where she was born Nov. 24, 1903, she accompanied her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Peter O'Dowd to Charlotte, Ia., when she was 9 years old. After five years they moved to southern Missouri, to Shenandoah in 1917 and to Imogene in 1921. On April 23, 1921 she was married to Ralph Archer. The Archers lived in Grand Island and Bassett, Neb., and again at Imogene before coming to Red Oak in 1936.

Father M. M. Tennessen will conduct the services. Pallbearers will be Gammell Brown, Austin Russell, Stephen Hanrahan, John Bradley, Mathew O'Brian and John Martin. The Perryman service will be in charge.

LEO S. ARCHER

Leo Shunick Archer was born December 31, 1892 in Fremont County, Iowa, to Frederick and Julie Shunick Archer, and died May 15, 1976 at the Rosary Hospital in Corning, Iowa, at the age of 83 years, four months and 14 days.

He was united in marriage to Elsie Zondler in Audubon, Iowa, August 15, 1931. To this union two sons were born, Bill Archer and Charles Archer.

Leo is survived by his son Bill of Corning; a sister Mrs. Ruth (Frank) Saner of Alameda, Calif., a brother Robert Archer of Portland, Oregon and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his wife Elsie, November 11, 1969, also by his parents, and a son, Charles.

Funeral mass was held May 17 at St. Patrick Catholic church in Corning with Rev. Monsignor (?) officiating . Burial was in Mt. Calvary Cemetery in Imogene. Mrs. Bill Kelly was organist. Paulbearers were Jim Sullivan, John Jones, Gerald Skahill, bill Ryan, Julius Dinville and Robert Gilmore.

VALLISCA MAN COUNTY'S FIRST TRAFFIC DEATH

Charles Archer Is Killed When Car Leaves Road

Montgomery county's first 1954 highway fatality was recorded Sunday when Charles Archer, 29, Vallisca, was apparently instantly killed when his 1953 Ford plunged into a deep drainage ditch early Sunday morning 3 1/2 miles north of Villisca on a county road.

It is believed Archer a Creighton university law student, fell asleep at the wheel, Sheriff Chet McCune stated.

Coroner Delaine Sellergren, Red Oak, said it would not be known whether or not an inquest would be held until the pathologist's report on autopsy findings is available.

The accident happened about 1 a.m. Sunday morning. The Keith Nowels family, who live nearby, heard a crash about that time and investigated, but could find no accident trace then. Discovery of the wrecked car with Mr. Archer's body was made about 9 Sunday morning. The steep ditch, about 25 feet, prevented earlier discovery, it is believed. The car was extensively damaged.

Funeral services -

Funeral services with arrangements in charge of the Wolfe Funeral Home, Villisca, are tentatively set for 9 a.m. Wednesday morning April 28, at the St. Mary's Roman Catholic church in Vallisca. Burial will be at Imogene.

Archer is survived by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Leo Archer, who reside about 10 miles north of Vallisca, and a brother, at home.

By coincidence, Montgomery county's first 1953 highway fatality also took place in April. Frederick Head, 70, Omaha, died at Red Oak April 10 of injuries received in a car-truck crash the previous day at the east edge of Red Oak.
