JOHN SHUNICK’s date of birth is something of a mystery. His naturalization papers give his date of birth as 21 June 1831. His grave marker says 24 June 1830. Until we can check baptism records, it appears we will not know for sure which is the correct date. Information from Helen Laughlin in August of 2002 shows the baptism record in Ireland to be 24th of June 1829 John married
Catherine LEE in August of 1855. This, too, is
something of a mystery. Naturalization papers say they were married in "St.
Albany, Vermont." When I, (Donna Archer ) wrote for a copy of the marriage certificate to
St. ALBANS, Vermont, which is in the same county as Fletcher, their first place
of settlement, they could not locate anything on this marriage. While in
Monmouth last month, we discovered a biographical sketch regarding David Henry
Shunick, one of their children. It stated that they "first lived in
Vermont, but later went to New York, where they met and were married."
Perhaps they were married in ALBANY, NEW YORK. John and
Catherine (Lee) Shunick were the parents of fourteen children. They were: John
W., Mary Ann (Mollie), Anastasia, Julia Agnes, Morris J., Fanny I., Harriett,
Nora, Anna, Catherine E., Frances, David Henry, Blanche, and Theresa (Tressa). Catherine’s
Funeral Notice said: "Mrs.
Catherine Shunick. The funeral of Mrs. Catherine Shunick was held this morning
at the Church of’ the Immaculate Conception at 11 o’clock. Father Owens
conducted the services assisted by Father Healy. The music was by Mrs. Hodgens,
Miss Kate Leins and Gus Von Arx, and the pallbearers were Morris, Edward and
Thomas Shunick of Monmouth, Ill; James Shunick of Alexis; James O’Donnell of
Chicago and Ira Gardner of Gerlaw, Illinois." About the Shunick family in Monmouth, Illinois"Historical and Biographical Record

first Shunick to move to Iowa. When he was left to raise his three daughters
alone, he sent first for one unmarried sister and then another, replacing the
one who had married with the next one in line. The last one to help raise the

met and married Matt CRILLY. That is why so many of the family of John and Kate
